Article of 80-20: Ohio’s Impact On Asian Ams
Friday, July 16th, 2010
Enclosed is another email from 80-20 for your reading on the weekend. Recalling on Bush second term election, a Vietnamese group tried to organize Vietnamese in Ohio to vote for Bush because of close call on the polls and promises from Bush election campaign headquarter.
Thing will be change from this year election. California races and Vietnamese candidates on the west coast will get big headlines. I will concentrate on Maryland if Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian candidates could make history or Republican could win another governor race in the east coast in general election. There is an earthquake in Montgomery county. It’s hot in the summer. The political landscape could change in Montgomery county too.

Ohio has only 135,000 Asian Ams. However, it already has 2 active
chapters, forming a 3rd and aiming to have a 4th chapter — hopefully
before Ohio elects its NEXT governor this November.
So what? Ohio might become the first of the 50 states whose Asian Ams
will enjoy equal opportunity in the state government agencies and the
state universities. That is the essence of 80-20, and the political process it
advocates.
What is so special is that Ohio is fairly conservative. It doesn’t
have a large AsAm population. It is the perpetual battle-ground-state
of presidential elections. It is leading the way for the AsAm community.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -DETAILS
2 years ago, a NW-Ohio chapter, centered about Toledo, was formed
with a bare 25 members. Prof. Yueh-ting Lee, an 80-20 Board member,
was the leading force. It immediately emulated 80-20 National’s method-
ology of using the election to get commitments from political leaders. A
questionaire was sent to all mayoral candidates of Toledo asking for “yes
and No” answers i.e. iron-clad commitments. All candidates save one
answered. When the mayor was elected, his commitments were fulfilled
and began to benefit the AsAm community. Both the mayor and Asian
Ams in Toledo were pleased. The chapter has grown to 52 members.
A couple of days ago, a SW-Ohio chapter centered about Cincinnati
and Dayton was formed. Munsup Seoh & others were leaders.
Munsup Seoh and Yueh-ting Lee are working to stimulate a NE-Ohio
chapter, centered about Cleveland. The 4th, Central-Ohio chapter
shall be centered about Columbus. Imagine, if all that gets done soon,
and a questionnaire sent to Ohio’s gubernatorial candidates.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -DETAILS END
Wouldn’t it be nice if the 135,000 Asian Ams in Ohio show the rest of us,
14 million strong, how to become equal citizens quickly. When women,
blacks and Hispanics are all making great strides in ridding themselves of
the glass ceiling, why are we sitting relatively still? We look to our heroes
and heroines in Ohio.

Well, I deleted the article by mistake when trying updating the post. However, it’s good news that two more Vietnamese articles about this primary election in San Jose.
VietBao.com summarized San Jose election about Vietnamese candidates and flags.

Vietnamese Election Guides for California Primary Election 2010
Thursday, June 3rd, 2010
Well, it’s hard to read and understand everything in English for an average American. Most Vietnamese American candidates probably did ask Vietnamese Americans to take advantage on voting early or absentee ballot in this primary election.
Enclosed is the best primary election guide in Vietnamese language on the web.

Updating on Vietnamese Candidates in District 7 San Jose council race
Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010
It’s really like summer heat sizzling in San Jose political campaign. First, Magdalena Carrasco got tag Vietnamese Communist Flag with sending to Vietnamese residents in District 5 by unknown mailer. Then the San Jose Editorial endorsed Madison Nguyen on May 23rd before did a deep coverage news article on the race on May 31st. There are some emails forward to Vietnamese mailings calling not to vote for Minh Duong because of 2 current lawsuits and will be a waist of voting effort but without endorsing anyone. The Vietnamese-American Voters of Northern California (VAV NorCal) will be lost more political ground if Madison Nguyen win again. From their website, Rudy Rodriguez and Minh Dương are only candidates showing up on meeting the voters on March 11.

Governor race in California primary election 2010
Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
Since there is no contest in Democrat primary for Jerry Brown, there is nothing special to cover until general election. Meg Whitman got no secure in the poll to run away from Steve Poizer from week to week. Since Meg Whitman is former eBay chief executive, she got a lot of money to burn Steve Poizer who was state Insurance Commissioner from gaining any ground in California primary election 2010.
Meg Whitman tried to secure Vietnamese voters in Orange county by dialing Supervisor Janet Nguyen. It’s a win win win situation for Meg Whitman and Janet Nguyen.
However Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger did not getting any S.O.S. calls from Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner yet.
Enclose is the invitation in English below on behalf of Supervisor Janet Nguyen (Chair, OC Board of Supervisors) (janetnguyen@janetnguyen.com) in Vietnamese forum.
